Start Digging.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. (Matthew 6:20)

I remember (a few years back) reading about how thousands of people were flocking to the western United States to find gold. River bottoms from California to Colorado were being scoured for treasure, and old abandoned gold mines found new life. What is interesting is that all these people had known for years that there was gold to be found in those places, but the difference became the value of that precious metal. As soon as the price of gold skyrocketed, mining the dust and flecks became a worthwhile effort.

What would you do if you found out that 100 pounds of gold was hidden within the walls of your home? If it were me, I would drop everything I was doing and search like mad. Suddenly, the television, the internet, and even eating would hold much less interest for me in the light of finding the treasure.

Guess what? You have something within the restrictions of your residence that is worth far more than any amount of gold. Sure, I don't know everything that's in your house- but I'm willing to wager that somewhere on a coffee table or in a bookshelf or under your bed is a book that has simply this on the cover:

Holy Bible

Who says that the Bible is worth more than gold? At least two very prominent people:

Job (an extremely wealthy person) said that the wisdom of God cannot be purchased for any price (Job 28:15)

King David (an even wealthier person) said:

"The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb." (Psalm 19:9-10)

Now it's one thing for people who have no riches to say that God's word has more value than material things- how would they know? It's quite another for someone who has 'been there/done that' to state that Scripture has the highest importance in the universe.

Why is Scripture better than gold? Here are just a few reasons:

  • It leads people to salvation
  • It shows us how to live a meaningful life
  • It draws us closer to the Savior
  • It comforts, directs, encourages, heals, convicts, and a hundred other things that money cannot do

Maybe that spiritual "gold mine" has been there all along, but now you realize that the benefits are more than worth the effort. Here are a couple suggestions on getting started:

  • Begin with a Proverb or a Psalm a day
  • Commit to reading through one of the gospels over the next few months
  • Ask your youth leader and/or a friend to read through one of Paul's letters
  • Just pick it up and begin at the beginning- you know: THE Beginning (Genesis 1:1)

So what are you waiting for? Grab your spiritual pick and start digging!

Super-sized Christianity

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (I Peter 2:1-3)

I recently read an article about how the incidence of heart disease in Japan has risen sharply over the past decade. For hundreds of years, Japan has had a relatively small percentage of its population plagued by plaque. Yet in the span of a few short years, the populace is suddenly threatened with a real health problem.

Is there a government conspiracy to keep the population down? No. Is there an airborne virus that automatically raises cholesterol levels? I don't think so. Actually the cause is pretty easy to spot: two words- fast food.

Yep, with the introduction of good old greasy American by products into the food market of Japan, heart disease came lagging right behind. The traditional Japanese diet was incredibly healthy, that's one reason why bad heart health was not formerly a problem.

Don't get me wrong, I am definitely one of the '6 billion served' or whatever it is up to now. I'm the first to divert to the drive-through instead of making a meal. The point is that taking dietary short cuts makes a long road to health.

Too bad we don't have a test to instantly check in on our spiritual health. My guess is that most Christians are fast-food eaters, and that's a bad thing. Let me list a few of the spiritual fast food restaurants in your area to see if you've been dining there lately.

McBibles- you can't miss this place; it's the one with the golden lettering on the front. Most people flip it open and shove down a quick verse or two, burp out an application, and hit the road. Oh, the ingredients are there for an incredible meal, but it's a lot easier to live by the Evangelical motto: A verse a day keeps the devil away.

Church Bell- Many believers make a weekly run for the spiritual border. Sure, the truth is pastorally processed and religiously refried, but 30 minutes of preacher pontification seems to fill you up for six days.

Media King- Why break open your Bible or go to church when you can be fed right in the comfort of your own car or living room? There's plenty of spiritual fast food floating through the airwaves, so why not dine on some delicious doctrinal delivery?

Of course there is nothing wrong with getting spiritually fed once in a while at these restaurants, but if they become the primary sources of your spiritual diet, you are headed for spiritual heart disease.

Charles H. Spurgeon once said:

"A true Christian would rather go without a meal than without a sermon. He would sooner miss a meal than lose his daily portion of Scripture or his daily resort to the house of prayer."

This week, take some time to really 'crave' the living word of God. Read, recite, memorize, and share with others what you have learned. You may be surprised how incredible a real spiritual meal tastes. Bon Appetit!

Questions:

  1. When was the last time you had a 'real' spiritual meal?
  2. How many verses could you quote from memory?
  3. What are the negative consequences of eating spiritual fast food?

Getting down to business!

"Search me, O God, and know my heart." (Psalm 139:23)

Packrats...do you know any? No, they are not little furry creatures that are often seen with suitcases, they are actually people just like you and me. Packrats are people who have the art of 'clutterization' down to a science. Their personal space has been taken over by a galaxy of untidiness. There are boxes of items that haven't been touched for ages, shoes that will never be worn again, repetitions of unread books, and a host of other things that would never be missed if they were gone.

Why do people allow a disarray of debris to pervade their personal space? Perhaps it is a lack of time, discipline, desire, or a combination of the three- but the results are the same. Household clutter occupies space, saps energy, and creates frustration.

Have you ever wondered if you might be a spiritual packrat? Remember, the very presence of Jesus Christ indwells (lives in) believers. In other words, your heart is Christ's home. In the physical realm, packrats muddle their homes with unneeded items. Sure, we're the ones who allowed the stuff in our house in the first place, but it's important to regularly 'dejunk' our space. Spiritual packrats are much the same—they allow Christ's home to get muddled by unneeded items. Unresolved conflicts pile up in the corner; unconfessed sins fill up all the closet space; and unspoken prayers litter our minds. It is crucial that we regularly 'dejunk' our spiritual lives.

If you are a spiritual packrat, maybe it's time to give Jesus a little more room in your heart. If you're a little rusty on how to 'declutter' your house, here's some speed cleaning advice from God's Word.

Unresolved conflicts:

"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault." (Mt. 18:15).

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift." (Mt. 5:23-24)

Either way you slice it, you are responsible for resolving conflict, regardless of whether or not you were the one offended. If you were hurt, go to the person; if you hurt someone else, go to the person.

Unconfessed sin:

"If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened" (Psa. 66:18)

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins" (1 Jn. 1:9)

When sin is left unconfessed, it's like a dirty pile of socks that makes the room smell worse with every passing hour. Keep short accounts with God.

Unspoken prayers:

"Let your requests be made known to God" (Phil. 4:6)

When we fail to go to the Father with our prayers, we fall prey to worry- which then fills our lives with unnecessary stress.

David's prayer in Psalm 139:23-24 can be a brilliant beginning to a clean spiritual home as we ask God to search us, point out our wicked ways, and lead us in His will. It's very tough for Christ to use you to reach your friends if He can't even find His way through your heart!

Life is like a bowl of peanuts.

Here is a Devotional for you today, its a little longer than normal, but still is a great reminder. Praying for you guys today.

At eighty years young, it was getting harder for Walter to take care of himself so his family decided that a nursing home for the aged would be the best place for him.

Of course the old man rejected the idea, but eventually he was convinced that it was the right thing to do. On his first day at the home, he spent most of his time laying in bed reflecting on life, feeling lonely. A while later, an orderly stopped by to see how Walter's first day was going.

"How you doing today?" she asked the old man, "First day I see?" Walter nodded.

In no time the two began talking up a storm. As the conversation began to drag on, the orderly was eyeing the room filled with fresh flowers, cards and balloons from friends and relatives. She noticed a bowl full of peanuts sitting on top of the table next to the bed, and helped herself to a handful.

As the two continued to converse with each other, the orderly kept eating more helpings of the peanuts. She looked at her watch and noticed that nearly 2 hours had passed and said,

"My goodness, the time has gone by quickly. I have to tend to other people here too."

"That's okay." Walter replied, "I feel so much better being able to talk to someone." Looking into the bowl the orderly said, "I feel awful! I ate almost all of your peanuts!"

"That's okay," responded Walter, "Ever since I got these false teeth, all I could do was suck the chocolate off of them anyhow."

Life is not always as it seems, wouldn't you agree? It was Forrest Gump who was fond of saying that "life is like a box of chocolates", but I would observe that life is probably a lot more like the bowl of peanuts mentioned in the story above.

How so?

Oftentimes we happily help ourselves to the pleasures of life without knowing where they came from. Take for example the orderly in our story. By all appearances the peanuts looked normal enough, so she unquestioningly decided to meet her need by taking and eating. It was just a bit too late for her when the truth came out about the lacquered legumes.

Sorta reminds me of a story from the Bible involving our original parents that went down like this:

The serpent was clever, more clever than any wild animal GOD had made. He spoke to the Woman:

"Do I understand that God told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?"

The Woman said to the serpent, "Not at all. We can eat from the trees in the garden. It's only about the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, "Don't eat from it; don't even touch it or you'll die.'"

The serpent told the Woman, "You won't die. God knows that the moment you eat from that tree, you'll see what's really going on. You'll be just like God, knowing everything, ranging all the way from good to evil."

When the Woman saw that the tree looked like good eating and realized what she would get out of it--she'd know everything!--she took and ate the fruit and then gave some to her husband, and he ate. Immediately the two of them did "see what's really going on"--saw themselves naked! They sewed fig leaves together as makeshift clothes for themselves. (Genesis 3:1-7)

Eve gave into the temptation to act on an impulse without asking the right questions- and humanity has been paying the price ever since.

What about you? Have you ever considered the notion that Satan has a bowl of putrid peanuts out on the table of life for you? It can come in the form of friendships that seem harmless enough- but if you decide to pursue them, you will most certainly end up with regrets. Or perhaps your weakness is unforgiveness. You delight in continually making your offenders pay by treating them coldly. Just remember that each time you do that, you are chomping down on another tainted nut.

Then there are others who are charmed by the allure of popularity. Certain choices are made and morality is comprised for the elusive promise of being 'the stuff' on campus or at work.

Don't forget about the internet. Just a few clicks away from the supposed 'harmless' images that will be permanently stored away in your brain for future use by the devil...not to mentioned the warped view you will develop regarding human beings made in the image of God.

There are so many more wrong kinds of bowls out there, and I don't have room on the table to mention them all. But do you want the cure for peanut gulping?

Here you go:

So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life--your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life--and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. (Romans 12:1-2)

Think twice before taking that next bite out of life, you may just save yourself from a mouthful of misery.

The Dad life!

The summer of awesomeness

Hey there everyone, I hope your summer is going awesome. I know mine is still pretty busy. I really thought when the summer break would hit I would have a little bit more time to be able to rest, and it feels like things are more hectic and crazy, but God is still good, and He is doing some great things in the lives of our students.

It was so much fun last night getting to hang out by the pool, and play some basketball with the guys. We had a great time with all the high school students who came. Those who missed its all good, we still love you, and hope you were spending that time with your father.

Most days here on the blogspot I will be posting Devotionals, or upcoming event details. So today we have an event this Wednesday:

This coming Wednesday we are taking our new 7th grade students to Fort Wayne for a fun day! The cost is 10$, and we will leave at 10am. Believe me they will not want to miss out on this trip.

I hope you guys have a great day

Make wise choices, Be STRONG, BE UNSTOPPABLE

Having a Bad Day?

The Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper. (Genesis 39:23)

Sometimes I think I have the perfect plan for my day. In my mind's eye I see everything coming together and working out in a precise and complete way.

Of course, those are usually the days that turn out the worst. Seems like oftentimes I try to do everything right, only to see it turn out all wrong. At those times there's a little nagging voice in my head that brings up questions like -

  • "Am I out of God's will?"
  • "Am I a bad person?"
  • "Doesn't God care about my circumstances?"

Joseph must have had similar questions as he lived through the events recorded in Genesis 39. At one point, life was going extremely well for him. Yet in the matter of a few days, his world caved in. He woke up one day with a perfect plan, only to be kidnapped began and sold into slavery by his own brothers because of their jealousy. Talk about sibling rivalry taken to the extreme! Then for years to follow his life was one dreadful event after another. No matter what right move he made, trouble kept stalking him. For instance, despite his deep walk with God, commitment to obedience and ability to resist temptation, Joseph was falsely accused of committing a serious crime against the wife of Potiphar, his master. Surely Potiphar would recognize who was telling the truth, right? Or at least God would make it clear to him since Joseph had such a great relationship with Him.

Nope.

Potiphar responded by throwing Joseph into prison. There he was--a good, gallant, God-trusting man decaying in a dark, dank, dingy Egyptian dungeon.

Was he out of God's will? No. Was he out of God's favor? Don't think so. Did he not have enough faith? Hardly.

In fact, here's the really interesting part: smack dab in the middle of Joseph's terrible circumstances, the Bible says that "The Lord was with Joseph" (39:21). God had been and was still working out His plan, and for a while it called for Joseph to be in an Egyptian prison. What seemed to be bad was actually good, because it was part of God's perfect plan. After all those difficult years, Joseph easily could have turned bitter. Yet instead he had the "big picture" perspective. Here's what he told his brothers: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." (Genesis 50:20)

God used every detail of Joseph's circumstances to save an entire civilization.

Perhaps things don't seem to be going your way, even though you're doing your best to follow Christ. Don't throw a pity party for yourself, join the Joseph club and have full assurance that God will work things out!

Questions:

  1. Are things "going your way" right now? Why or why not?
  2. Why does God allow us to struggle through bad circumstances?
  3. How would you be different if everything always went your way?

10 Reasons I should not be dating Him/Her

I know that some of these have to deal with those who might in College or maybe a young adult, but High school and Junior High students can learn from these!

Enjoy!

#1 – They are not willing to fight FOR purity. (Trust me…if they won’t fight for purity with you before you are married then there is a greater chance they won’t fight for purity after you are married.)

#2 – If they are trying to get me to compromise with God’s Word says so clearly. (If they lead you away from God’s Word before marriage they will do so even more after marriage…the way they have lived in their past and the way they are living now are indicators of how they are going to live when they marry you. You cannot change them…you are NOT the Holy Spirit!)

#3 – If you are always defending him/her to the people who know me, love me and love Jesus. (Love is blind…and many times you cannot see the blind spots that others can see so clearly.)

#4 – If you find yourself not wanting to talk about him/her in front of the people in your life that you know may disapprove of the relationship for some reason. (Because…when this happens you are choosing to ignore what the Lord could be trying to make obvious through others because you are too involved emotionally to make a rational decision.)

#5 – If you know the relationship isn’t really going anywhere…but you don’t want to “break up” because doing so would cause you to be insecure because you have allowed yourself to be identified by who you are dating rather than who you are in Christ.

#6 – You find out that they are lying to you. If they lie to you before you are married then they will lie to you in marriage.

#7 – If you cannot confront them about issues without them losing their temper.

#8 – If you discover that they are unfaithful to you.

#9 – If something about them absolutely drives you insane…but you convince yourself that after you get married “that problem” will go away. (Actually…it’s won’t, it will get larger!)

#10 – If the Lord has specifically spoken to you and instructed you to end the relationship but you can’t/won’t because you either “don’t want to hurt them” or you fear that if you end this relationship then you won’t have another chance at one.

Polar bears.

"The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you." (Romans 16:20)

The arctic polar bear is the largest land carnivore in the world. It can weigh between 700 and 1200 pounds. It needs at least 5 pounds of fat per day just to survive. Where can such an animal find huge amounts of food in a frozen wasteland? Actually, it's easier than you think, because many of the polar bear's neighbors (the seals) have a load of lard to offer. In fact, the polar bear feeds almost entirely on seals. The problem is capturing them, because they tend to be pretty slippery, and they have a habit of jumping in the water rather quickly when they see a polar bear charging. To secure the extra value seal meal, the bear sometimes resorts to a cunning bit of trickery. If the hole in the ice through which the seal gets his food is not too far from the edge of open water, the polar bear will take a deep breath, slip underwater, and swim to the seal's fishing hole. He will then actually imitate a fish by scratching lightly on the underside of the ice. When the seal hears this sound, he dives in for a quick bite, only to find himself being the main course.

The apostle Peter calls Satan a "roaring lion", but I think an alternative title could be a "hungry polar bear". Every hour of every day he and his army of demons are seeking "Christian seals" to attack and devour using the same strategy. First, he figures out where we like to 'hang out' and spend our free time. For some, it's the mall, the movie theater, or in front of the television and/or computer. For others, it is with a group of close friends or perhaps with a boyfriend/girlfriend. Whatever the case, he's got us scoped out well. Most of the time these "fishing holes" are harmless, but sometimes he hides under the surface and baits us with some seemingly harmless pleasure. What we don't realize is that he is disguising the devastating consequences of sin with something that looks or sounds appealing. Then, when we've surrendered to the temptation, he catches us in his trap and consumes our dedication to Christ.

Here are a few examples of "ice scratching" that might come your way:

  1. prayer request discussions that turn into gossip sessions
  2. hurt feelings that become roots of bitterness
  3. national pride that degenerates into deep seated prejudice
  4. internet research that surfs over to pornographic exploration
  5. friendly jests that grow into spiteful shots

The apostle Paul wrote that "we are not unaware of his (Satan's) schemes" (2 Corinthians 2:11). We know that he is after us, we know that he hides beneath the surface of life and waits for us to dive into sinful waters- so why do we keep doing it? Christians have no excuse for being taken in by the deception of the enemy. The Bible instructs us to "resist the devil, and he will flee..." (James 4:7). In other words, the next time Satan is scratching at the surface of your fishing hole, just remember that you can pray much longer than he can hold his breath.

Questions:

  1. What area of your life is being dominated by Satan?
  2. How aware are you of his schemes?
  3. Do you need to change "fishing holes"?

Worship Experience

Hey there everyone! I hope things are going well for you guys today. I know some of you are already out of school and that is awesome. Over here in Northridge land we still have 5 days left of school! MAN! You guys are almost done, you can do it, finish strong.

Tonight is our worship experience night. We are going to be playing some games at the beginning but at 7pm we are going to start with our worship experience. We have got some great things planned for you all tonight.

Tonight we are going to take a straight hour to meet with God. I know for me it has been a long time since I have got to spend and hour in worship just singing, and sitting with God. Tonight you get that opportunity. We have 6 stations, plus worship that you can participate in. Each station has a different attribute of your walk with Christ. Tonight we want you to BE with Christ.

Know for some of you an hour seems like a really long time, and it seems really boring but I promise you that if you come tonight and honestly place yourself at the feet of God, God can do some amazing things in your life TONIGHT!

I know that is my prayer going into tonight.

I hope you can make it tonight, I would invite everyone to really take a look at your schedule tonight and if you choosing between hanging out with friends tonight and church, why don't you bring your friends for the hour long service we will have tonight? I promise if you take this seriously, God will move tonight!

See you tonight at 6:30! We will be done at 8pm, but we are going to hang out till 8:30pm just playing some other games, and talking.

Hope to see you there!
