5 Things for you to bring tonight

Hey there everyone here are some things that you should bring to Refuge tonight!

1. Your Bible, we are going to be dissecting John 3 tonight. It would be good for everyone to have a bible. So you can mark in it, and make notes.

2. A friend, we are going to have a ton of fun tonight, and we are going to be having some really good worship, bringing someone along with you is a ton more fun then just coming by yourself. So today at Lunch or after school invite a friend to come over and then head over to Refuge at 6:30!

3. A good attitude, I understand that everyone is tired and busy, but tonight when you come before you walk in the doors, take some time to pray and get ready to experience God on a brand new level.

4. Energy, We have some really awesome games we are going to be playing tonight, we have some great video's, and some pumping worship tonight. So bring the energy tonight, and we are all going to have a great night!

5. A heart ready to learn, tonight we are going to in our bibles a ton, and we are going to be breaking down what the scripture means and how we can apply that to our lives. God has some great plans for us tonight, but it won't work unless you bring a heart ready to learn.

So those are the 5 things you need to bring tonight!

We hope to see you here tonight.

2 Important Dates to write down

Hey there everyone, Welcome to Tuesday. Here are a couple dates you guys need to be aware of!

1. September 28th, 6:30pm - 8:30pm. This is our Bigger and Better event. Here is how this works. Every small group will meet at the church, and they will have a truck, and couple vans. They will be given a neighborhood, paper clip, and a scavenger hunt list. They will be heading out door to door looking to trade items up from the paper clip, they will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the middlebury food pantry. The small group with the most non-perishable food items, and the biggest or best item from trading up will win a pizza part for their small group that next week.

You don't want to miss this night, when we survey students at the end of the year, this consistently comes up as one of their most favorite events of the year. It's a really fun way to connect with their leaders, and friends in their small groups, but more importantly we are collecting things the food pantry, and our CVMC pass it forward sale.

All the items collected will be donated to the Pass it Forward sale or Goodwill.

2. October 9th, 5pm - 7:30pm This night we will having out 2nd student and silent Auction. This is a fundraiser for our students to raise money for our district conference in Fort Wayne IN. This conference is called 3DYC. During the month of September we will be collecting items from the church and students to Auction off in a silent auction, then the students will auction off themselves for raking leaves, babysitting, house work, and many other talents they have. So we are inviting everyone to come and bid and bid often on all sorts of fun things, and great students.

This conference has changed lives, and has called some students into full time ministry. This is a 3 day event where they will be surrounded by other students, and leaders that will be encouraging them in their walk with Christ. There will also be main sessions where they will have great worship, and a great speaker that will challenge the students. They also have break out sessions, where they can get some specific training, like talking to their friends about Christ, Evolution vs Creation, Junior high Leadership, and much more.

You can check more out here at their Website.

We hope you will put those 2 dates on your calendar!

Have a great day.

What a great night

Hey there everyone, Last night was a blast! The games were so stinking awesome, and there was such a great energy in the room so well done everyone!

Here is a little recap of last nights messages:

1. The relationship you need to work on the most is yours with Christ.
2. Repair broken relationships, before you bring your sacrifice to Christ. (Matt 5:23-24)
3. Don't run away from a hard conversation.

Don't be a lazy Christ follower. If there are things that you need to make right between you and another person go and do it! Don't wait any longer.

Last night we discussed the REFUGE mentality. Our Refuge mentality is to make a place where students can come and ask honest questions, have honest and open relationships with caring adults, and have a ton of fun while doing it all.

But that all crumbles and falls apart if we have distention between people in our own youth group. Don't let that happen because you are afraid of what a person might say, or because you are just not wanting to do it.

God has some majorly awesome things in store for all of us.

Keep seeking Christ with everything you have!

REFUGE tonight!

Hey there everyone, tonight is the night, we are bringing everyone together. Junior High, and Senior high to have the first ever combined REFUGE night!

I honestly believe God has some amazing things He wants to do tonight in our lives, so come ready to hear from God in a powerful way. Tonight we are going to be tackling some hard questions about relationships. We aren't going to be just talking about Boyfriend/girlfriend relationships but friendships, family, and other relationships that will pop up in your life.

Before you come to REFUGE tonight, take some time to read over Matthew 5:23-24. We will be going all around the bible, but stopping at this verse tonight.

We hope that everyone can make it tonight. We are going to be having a ton fun as well. I am feeling in a very generous mood, so we be giving some things away tonight!

God has some major things He wants to do in your life, are you ready to hear from Him? The REFUGE is a place where you can rest, ask honest questions, and pray honest prayers. We have adult and student leaders who want to encourage, pray for, and have a ton of fun with you. We hope you might consider checking out the REFUGE tonight at 6:30pm at Crystal Valley Missionary Church.

Hope to see you here tonight!

Looking ahead

Have you ever been so excited for something it makes you unable to sleep? That is how excited I am for youth group this Wednesday night! I believe God is setting this night up to rock some people's lives, so this is your mission for this Wednesday night.

1. Put coming to REFUGE a priority this week.
2. Read Matthew 5:23-24 before you come.
3. Invite a good friend to come with you.

If you do those 3 things before you come to REFUGE tomorrow we will have a great night.

My prayer for this Wednesday night is that the walls can't contain the Love and Restoration that God wants to rain down tomorrow night at REFUGE.

So lets be praying for tomorrow night in a real and passionate way. God wants to restore relationships, but the one relationship He wants to restore the most is the one between You and Him! So prepare your hearts, and allow God to do something amazing tomorrow night.

We would love to see everyone there!

Have a great Tuesday.

Great kick off

Hey there everyone, I hope things are going awesome for you! I know I am extremely tired from last but man, what a great way to kick off our new name! REFUGE!

Next week we will all be together at the church so it will be a really fun time getting to see everyone.

I hope you all great time last night, if you are new here to this site, on Thursdays I normally give a devotional so you can start the end of your week on a great note.

After an accident, a woman stepped forward and began to help the victim. She was pushed aside by a man who announced,

"I've had a course in first aid and I'm trained in CPR."

The woman watched his procedures for a few moments, then tapped him on the shoulder.

"When you get to the part about calling a doctor," she said, "I'm already here."

Have you had any accidents lately? I'm not talking about automobile wrecks, what I mean are those periods in life where you feel like you just got run over. It could be relationship trouble, financial difficulties, poor health, or any other number of misfortunes that blindside us and leave a mess of things.

But that's o.k. - right? We've all been trained in the First Aid Kit of life. We know how to handle our own problems, fix our own messes, and heal our own injuries. In fact, if we don't help ourselves, who knows what might happen? We may just be left in the street, because other people are so preoccupied with themselves- they'll probably just step right over us.

We're just like the guy in the story. As soon as we detect a problem, we rush right to it, pull out the First Aid Kit, and get to work.

Meanwhile, there is Someone else standing right by, watching you try desperately to "fix" the issues of your life. In fact, you probably shoved Him out of the way in your ambitious attempt to get your stuff together.

Who am I talking about? Jesus- the Great Physician. His specialty is putting the pieces of life's accidents back together. Let me give you a few examples:

Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour. (Matthew 8:13)

Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment. (Matthew 9:22)

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. (Matthew 14:14)

Things are no different now. He has compassion on us, and He knows what we need before we even ask, but sometimes we never get to asking because we're too focused on the difficulty at hand.

Meanwhile, Jesus is whispering to us: "When you get to the part about calling a doctor, I'm already here."

Temptations.

He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13b (NLT)

It was total darkness outside. There were no stars and no street lights. The only light was coming from my headlights, which I had on full blast so that my squinting eyes could make out what was up ahead. Then it got worse. A rain drop here and another one there. Before I knew it the heavens opened up and my windshield wipers came on.

Driving can be hard enough at night and can become next to impossible with a downpour and wind blowing you from one side of the road to the other. Temptation can creep up on us faster than a thunderstorm, and when it unleashes, can wreck us and throw our lives off road and off course. Just like my windshield wipers and headlights are designed to help me see through the rain and darkness, the Bible is there to prepare you for what can and will happen.

As you read the stories of the Bible you will see where even the greats were tempted and tested, sometimes to the very brink of their sanity. Yet, the verse above reminds us that God is in control even when your surroundings are not. You can trust God and know that even if a hurricane of temptations swirl around you, the eye of the storm is not that far away.

Questions

"...we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." (Romans 8:37)

We just can't help it- everyday at some point we look in the mirror. To some it is an exercise in self-esteem: we see ourselves and say, "wow, I have a face that others could love!" But for most of us, it is more like an experience in reality: we see ourselves and think, "wow, I have a face that only a mother could love!"
Either way, we all face questions like, "Why did God make me like this? Who am I? Does my life really matter? What do others think of the way I look and act?"

The problem is that we try and answer these questions from Hollywood's perspective- you know- Tinsel town? In Tinsel town everyone is beautiful and life is oh so much better than mine. Hollywood has created a monster called the "world mirror"... (run for your lives!)

As a result, most teenagers suffer from what some call a poor self-image. They don't like the way they look. They think that they are being continually watched and criticized by others. After time and enough glances in the "world mirror"... , the poison of self-doubt, frustration, and discouragement creeps into their thinking.

The real question, though, is not what we see when we look at our reflection in the "world mirror"... . Rather the true issue is what God sees when He looks at us - and that is a whole different story!

The Bible tells us several truths about what He sees when He looks at us, because He is using the "God Mirror"- so let's take a look -

First of all, He sees us as specially created and uniquely made individuals. David put it this way in Psalm 139:13,14:

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;"

Just like David, you have been personally designed by God as a customized creation. From the color of your eyes to your thumbprint to your personality - the Master Himself has specially crafted you. Just remember the old saying: "God don't make no junk!"

Secondly, He sees us as saints. All throughout the New Testament Christians are called "saints." Essentially what this means is that the self-image of worthlessness and guilt are not the true reflection of you. God's Mirror was designed through the lenses of the cross. He sees you as forgiven, pure, and holy.
When God sees you, He sees the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Wow!

Finally, He sees you as His very own child. You are a child of the King: a royal member of the highest Kingdom in the universe. According to Galatians 1:7

"you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir."

This means that you are a family member who is entitled to all of God's blessings.

So the next time you look in the mirror, don't focus on the size of your nose or the shape of your body or the number of your zits. Forget the "world mirror", it's as warped as the ones at the amusement park. Instead, look in God's Mirror and think to yourself, "I am a unique creation, a holy saint, a child of the King." Over time, the true reflection of yourself will become clear, and you will know what it's like to be more than a "conqueror".

Sunday night Special

"God said to Moses, "I AM who I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.'" (Exodus 3:14)

Moses was terrified. First he had spent forty years in Egypt- the most powerful nation on earth- as a prince. Popular, revered, and held in the highest esteem. Add to his resume forty years in the desert as a shepherd working for his father-in-law. Lonely, unappreciated, and punching the clock at smelly job central.

Now he kneels trembling before Jesus in the burning bush being commissioned for a holy cause. He was being sent by God Himself to set the Israelites free from the Egyptians. Promotion? Sure. Chance to be restored to greatness? Absolutely!

Only - he didn't want to go.

He fired excuse after excuse at the blazing King. Christ had an answer for every one of them. One of Moses' excuses was "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?"

Jesus had an answer... "I AM who I AM."

In the same way Moses was a master of excuses when it came to delivering the Jews, aren't we the excuse experts when it comes to delivering the gospel? God Himself has commissioned us (Matthew 28) to "go and make disciples of all nations..."

But God - what if I don't I know what to say? What if they reject me? What if they ask me a question I don't have the answer to?" Blah. Blah. Blah.
The bottom line is this... the great "I AM" has sent us. Excuses fade into oblivion when it comes to Christ. When we realize who God is- excuses fall flat.

So who is God? Who is this "I AM"?

First - we know that He is "one God". Deuteronomy 6:4 reminds us, "The LORD our God, the LORD is one." Christianity is a monothesitic faith. "Mono" means one. "Theo" means "God." We believe in one God.

Second - we believe in one God who is comprised of three persons... the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each is fully God. Each is fully unique. Three persons: one essence.

The title some have given this truth is "The Trinity." One God (unity)- comprised of three persons (Trinity)

But get this. This triune God is sending you on a mission. This holy mission is to spread the Gospel to a dying world. Just like Moses, our excuses fail. Why? Because the "I AM" has sent us. We are on a mission from God- let's get busy!

Frogs and Us.

"But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong." (I John 1:9)

There once was a scientist who studied frogs. One day, the scientist put the frog on the ground and told it to jump. The frog jumped four feet. So the scientist wrote in his notebook, "frog with four feet, jumps four feet." So the scientist cut off one of one of the frog's legs. The scientist told the frog to jump. Frog jumped three feet. So the scientist wrote in his notebook, "frog with three feet, jumps three feet." So the scientist cut of another leg. He told the frog to jump. The frog jumped two feet. So the scientist wrote in his notebook "frog with two feet, jumps two feet."

The scientist cut off one more leg. He told the frog to jump. Frog jumped one foot. So the scientist wrote in his notebook, "frog with one foot, jumps one foot."

So the scientist cut off his last leg.

"He said, "Frog jump. Frog jump. FROG JUMP!"

So the scientist wrote in his notebook, "Frog with no feet, goes deaf."

How many of us are "scientists" when it comes to our philosophy of life? Let me paraphrase the frog story to explain what I mean:

There once was a Christian who studied life. One day, the Christian felt depressed, so he put his life events into a journal to see if his observations would help him figure out the reason for his unhappiness. The first day, the Christian lied once, gossiped twice, and coveted once. So the Christian wrote in his journal: "day had four sins, felt depressed four times". So the Christian decided to always tell the truth, not gossip, and be satisfied with his life. The next day, the Christian was unforgiving once, and hot tempered in traffic twice. So the Christian wrote in his journal: "day had three sins, felt depressed three times". So the Christian decided to forgive his friend, and be patient (especially in traffic). The next day, the Christian skipped his devotions and watched TV all day, and he stuffed his face with a fist full of Fritos and a bowl of chili. So the Christian wrote in his journal: "day had two sins, felt depressed twice". So the Christian decided to not be slothful or gluttonous. The next day, the Christian visited all the wrong sites on the internet. So the Christian wrote in his journal: "day had one sin, felt depressed once". The next day, the Christian didn't commit one sin! So the Christian wrote in his journal: "life with no sin, gets depressing".

It's right there in our face, isn't it? We harbor known sin, knowing that it wreaks havoc on our personal lives, and knowing that confession and repentance will restore our fellowship with our Creator. Yet when the time comes to come clean before God, we suddenly become convinced that if we let go of that little pet sin, our lives will be "happy challenged".

Here's an excerpt from another person who kept a journal about his spiritual life, except he came to the right conclusion.

"Oh, what joy for those whose rebellion is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight!

Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD has cleared of sin, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! When I refused to confess my sin, I was weak and miserable, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide them. I said to myself, "I will confess my rebellion to the LORD." And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Therefore, let all the godly confess their rebellion to you while there is time, that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment. For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory." (Psalm 32:1-7)

King David was a "scientist" for a while, but he was also a man after God's own heart. Eventually he realized that true satisfaction and joy in life is impossible to find without righteousness, and secret sins are the surest way to sadness.

I believe we are all smart enough to realize that a frog without legs is not going to get anywhere. Let's also be brainy enough to grasp this concept: life without righteousness is going nowhere fast.

Devotional for the day

The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. (2 Chronicles 16:9)

In my relationships with persons I have found that it does not help, in the long run, to act as though I were something that I am not.

- Carl Rogers

Good call, Carl. If you're reading this and you didn't know that- believe me, it is absolutely true. Oh yeah, hiding your true self and playing someone else may work in the short run, but one day you will be found out- then the whole foundation of your relationship crumples like burnt paper in your hands.

So lesson number one is be yourself...(exception: obviously if deep down you are a selfish, prideful, backstabbing, social ladder climber- maybe you shouldn't be yourself). I guess my point is you should be the person God made you to be, not the person the devil is trying to mold you into.

Which brings up lesson number two: be yourself especially in your relationship with God.

News flash: He is the Creator...as in: He created you. He knows you inside and out. Nobody said it better than the man after God's own heart: King David -

O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my every thought when far away.

You chart the path ahead of me and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment you know where I am. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You both precede and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to know!

I can never escape from your spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.

I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night--but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are both alike to you.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb.

Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous--and how well I know it.

You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable!

I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up in the morning, you are still with me! (Psalm 139:1-18)

Wow! Basically what David is telling us here is that to try and hide yourself from God is absolutely idiotic. Were we thinking that we could surprise God? Is there any thought, action, or attitude that we can shield from an all-knowing, all-seeing God?

To some this might be a terrifying thought, but to the believer this should be wonderful news! Think about it: Jesus knows everything you have ever done, are doing and will do- and yet He's crazy about you! He blows away Santa in the "He knows when you've been_______" category; still He showers us with unbelievable gifts everyday of the year.

So this week, try going to your Savior and opening up like never before. Pour out your heart. Tell Him about your weaknesses, failures, and shortcomings- because it's not like He didn't know already. If you do this on a consistent basis, it will have an amazing impact on your relationship with Christ.

One more thing- how did the knowledge of God's knowledge affect David?

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. (Psalm 139:23-24)

Let's keep it real, and may this be our prayer as well..
